I remember when I would work really hard to fundraise for my service project in Africa during my first year on NGA in 2008. Every day I would meet hundreds of different people in a constant effort to explain my project and raise the money for it. Along the way, I would sometimes come across a specific question that was very difficult to answer and forced me to reexamine the cause for which I was raising money.
That question, or statement, usually came in the following forms:
"Why help people in Africa/Asia when there are people in need in America?"
or,
"You need to help Americans before you help anyone else."
Before venturing to other countries while on NGA, I had no previous experience in volunteering anywhere other than my neighborhood. Of course, I had heard about Africa and Asia like everyone else who watches TV, participated in the Halloween drives for UNICEF, and saw the Invisible Children presentation in high school. However, I had no idea what it was really like over there. I had no idea of the kind of things I would witness in the developing countries I did service work in. It was difficult for me at that time to answer the question as to why we as NGA choose to go overseas to serve, but over the last two years I have found that answer. Connections Workshop - Man Day
Posted by NextGen AcademyDuring our recent Connections Workshop, the girls and guys were split up for two days to focus on the unique aspects each gender has to offer the other and in turn, the world. For us, those two days were quickly dubbed Man Day. NextGen Academy is all about challenging ourselves to uncover the authentic people we really are. Man Day was an extension of that idea and was designed to empower the guys of the program to step up.
